How green is commuting by bike?

By February 3, 2022No Comments

How green is commuting by bike compared to cars and other forms of transportation? Research conducted by a University of Oxford professor shows that if people decide to change their commuting habits, they can slash the size of their carbon footprint. By selecting a bike instead of a car for commuting needs, the average citizen can reduce their carbon emissions by 67 percent.

The research also looked at 3,800 people in seven European cities and found that there was still a difference even if bikes couldn’t be selected every time. Biking can be used for more than commuting. It can be used for recreational uses or errands like store trips, which people often take the car for. If one out of every ten people replaced their car trip with a bike trip, individual transportation emissions could decrease by 10 percent.

Cycling to work improves health

Green commuting has many other benefits too. Green commuting by bike can help you be healthier and reduce stress levels. Biking 10 miles to work can help you burn more than 400 calories.

If you don’t want to ride a traditional bike, electric bikes have been proved to be popular with commuters and recreational riders alike. E-bikes have zero emissions and are available for rent and purchase.

Micromobility e-bikes are good options too

Edenred has partnered with electric micromobility vehicle provider Ridepanda to provide commuting options for employees across the country. Ridepanda is well-known in the micromobility world for its light electric vehicles. Employees of companies who contract with Edenred can purchase regular-priced and discounted electric scooters, bikes, and mopeds for an easy, safe commute. It offers payment plans, roadside assistance, theft insurance, maintenance, and more.

Currently, bike commuting and micromobility vehicles are not eligible for commuter benefits, but that doesn’t mean your business can’t offer them to employees. If you’re looking for ways to reduce your employee’s carbon footprint, Edenred can help. Book a meeting with us today to see what we can do for you.
