E-scooter usage set to take off

By February 8, 2021 No Comments

Are we living amid an e-scooter revolution? Possibly.

Micromobility continues to gain attention as an alternative method of travel from traditional ways such as cars and mass transit. With Covid-19, many experts believe vehicles like e-scooters will continue to fill an important niche for travel.

Pre-pandemic numbers demonstrate the growth in e-scooter popularity. There were 38.5 million e-scooter trips registered in 2018. However, in 2019, that number skyrocketed to 86 million, according to the National Association of City Transportation. After dipping during the early stages of the pandemic, e-scooters are again gaining popularity.

Micromobility as a whole has many experts convinced it continue to grow. Consulting firm McKinsey & Company says the market for micromobility could be between $300- 500 billion in the next decade.

McKinsey’s Kersten Heineke told CNN that the pandemic helped drive people to micromobilty transportation as some people still don’t trust mass transit and not everyone has a car.

Commuters will appreciate having the different options to commute. In January, shared bike and scooter company Lime announced a partnership with us at Edenred Benefits to allow any of our clients to subsidize micromobility usage on Lime vehicles. That means up to 10 million people are now eligible for micromobility reimbursement.

The future for micromobility

There are many possible outcomes for micromobility and commuting in general. If employers promote e-scooters as a means of commuting to whatever the future of the office looks like, e-scooters and e-bikes could pick up a significant portion of commuting usage as the post-vaccine world starts to take shape.

Of course, micromobility has significant benefits besides allowing people to commute alone. Micromobility vehicles are great for the environment.
