The best cities for commuting with e-bikes and e-scooters

By September 29, 2021January 13th, 2022No Comments

E-bikes and e-scooters are one of many micromobility vehicles available for commuting

Take advantage of micromobility vehicles for your commute. There’s a lot of options in several cities, with companies opening new offices often. With the pandemic making things uncertain for public transportation, many believe now is a good time for shared mobility services like e-bikes and e-scooters to attract more riders. Micromobility vehicles continue to develop a fanbase across the United States and Europe as they compete with cars and public transportation for riders.

While ridership sorts itself out as people head back to the office or embrace hybrid work schedules, here are some rankings on best cities to ride an e-bike or e-scooter.

E-bike commuting

1 – New York City

If e-bikes can make it here, they can make it anywhere. New York legalized e-bikes in 2020, which was a big win for delivery workers and commuters. You can rent different types of e-bikes in New York or use your own.

2 – Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis is an excellent place for e-bike commuting, according to Himiway Bike. Himiway calls it “arguably the best city in the country for electric bike commuting for work.” The website cites the walkability score, the presence of several large companies, and a downtown that is easy to navigate on an e-bike as reasons why.

3 – Washington, DC

It can get cold in the winter, but Washington provides ample opportunities for people to ride e-bikes. Bike rentals are available, and the city is known for being bike-friendly.

E-scooter commuting

 1 – Santa Monica, California

Since scooters started showing up in Santa Monica in 2017, the city has adapted to users and provided regulations to keep people safe. There are special slow zones on the boardwalk, special parking spaces, guidelines for riders, and multiple companies are renting them to their employees.

2 – Portland, Oregon

E-scooters also arrived in Portland in 2017 and have found a home among city residents. More than 62 percent of residents approved of e-scooters, and the city has multiple pilot programs. The first program showed that scooters reduce congestion and air pollution. The second was designed to improve safety for riders and pedestrians.

While e-bikes and e-scooters are not covered under commuter benefits for 2021, companies can still pay for their employees to use micromobility vehicles. Edenred works with various providers to secure the best deals, including discounts. Employees can also pay for their rides with a prepaid card.
