Taking public transportation is about to get a lot better for pregnant women in South Korean cities thanks to the Pink Light Campaign.
Busan, the 2nd largest city in South Korea, is on a quest to make taking public transportation easier and a bit more comfortable for pregnant woman. The Pink Light Campaign “equips pregnant woman with a beacon to be used on the subway.” Seats designated for pregnant, disabled, or elderly passengers will be equipped with a pink light. Basically, “when a woman with a beacon approaches, the light will turn on, indicating to any non-pregnant person in that seat that they should give it up.”
There are a few reasons the city of Busan has implemented the Pink Light Campaign. For one thing, the city’s mayor, Suh Byung-soo wants pregnant women to “be able to use public transportation more easily and conveniently.”
Another goal is to help other public transit riders realize who and who isn’t pregnant, especially ladies who are early on in their pregnancies and might not be showing. The beacon will help them to get seats without them having to actually ask.
But, ultimately, the Pink Light Campaign is “designed to improve the country’s birthrate” as South Korea is said to have one “of the lowest birthrates in the world.”
