Consider micromobility as you commute back to the office
Have you ever wondered what is the most popular micromobility vehicle is? E-scooters, e-bikes, and bikes are all earning spots as the preferred means of transportation for riders. It’s hard to beat the convenience, pollution reduction, and health benefits.
According to the North American Bikeshare & Scootershare Association, micromobility trips offset 29 million pounds of CO2 emissions because of the corresponding number of car trips replaced in 2020. North American residents gained more than 12 million hours of additional physical activity because they chose an e-scooter, bike, or e-bike.
In 2020, there were 67.9 million trips on micromobility vehicles in the United States. Unfortunately, that’s a reduction in the total trips from 2019 totals caused by the pandemic. For its study, the NABSA looked at all trips in North America, where riders took 83.4 million trips. So, what micromobility vehicle is the most popular? Here’s what you need to know:
- Docked bikes – 49.9 million trips
- Dockless bikes – 2.9 million trips
- E-Scooters – 30.6 million trips
- Pedal Bikes – 42.9 million trips
- E-Bikes – 9.9 million trips
While e-scooters are gaining ground, people still prefer docked bikes for transportation. Micromobility remains popular with commuters with about 50 percent of riders using shared micromobility to connect to transit.
It will be interesting to see what micromobility usage fares will look like as we move past the pandemic. For example, riders took 136 million trips in 2019, according to the National Association of City Transportation Officials. That was a 60 percent increase from 2018. The 2020 report is not available at this time.
